Because it is condensed, it is easy to memorize. This English translation is offered for your consideration.) I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord,Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead;He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.Amen.
(The Nicene Creed was written down to dispel confusion among early Christians. The original Nicene Creed was not written in English. There are many translations of the Nicene Creed. The following translation is offered for your consideration.) I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, and born of the Father before all ages. God of God, light of light, true God of true God. Begotten not made, consubstantial to the Father, by whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven. And was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and of the Virgin Mary and was made man; was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, suffered, died, and was buried; and the third day rose again according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of the Father, and shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, of whose Kingdom there shall be no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who together with the Father and the Son is to be adored and glorified, who spoke by the Prophets. And one holy, Christian, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The original tablets of the ten commandments were brought to us by Moses. These original tablets have been lost or destroyed. One commonly accepted version of the Ten Commandments is found in the book of Exodus and another accepted version is found in the book of Deuteronomy. These two versions of the Ten Commandments are not word for word the same. These books were not originally written in English. There are various accepted translations of these books. Religious groups have numbered the ten commandments in different ways. The table below highlights those differences using the NRSV translation. |
